The Brinell hardness tester is a portable instrument used in the workshop, with simple operation and easy portability. It can test large workpieces on site without sampling, and can achieve piece by piece testing of large workpieces.
The Brinell hardness tester is mainly used for hardness testing of uneven forged steel and cast iron. The Brinell hardness of forged steel and gray cast iron has a good correspondence with tensile testing. The Brinell hardness test can also be used for non-ferrous metals and soft steel, and small diameter ball indenters can be used to measure small-sized and thinner materials. Brinell hardness tester is commonly used for testing raw materials and semi-finished products. Due to the large indentation, it is generally not used for testing finished products.
The selection of Brinell hardness test conditions is similar to the selection of the scale in Rockwell hardness test. Brinell hardness test also encounters the problem of selecting test conditions, namely the test force F and the diameter D of the indenter ball. This choice is not arbitrary, but must follow certain rules and pay attention to the reasonable combination of test force and indenter ball diameter. It is slightly more complex to apply than the Rockwell hardness test.

Advantage
The advantage of Brinell hardness test is its good hardness representativeness. Due to the commonly used 10mm diameter ball indenter and 3000Kg test force, its indentation area is large and can reflect the average value of the comprehensive influence of various metal composition phases over a large range. The surface is not affected by individual composition phases and small inhomogeneity, making it particularly suitable for measuring gray cast iron, bearing alloys, and metal materials with coarse grains. Its experimental data is stable, with good reproducibility and accuracy higher than Rockwell and lower than Vickers. In addition, there is a good correspondence between the Brinell hardness value and the tensile strength value.
